Numb

A week ago, was July 4. A week ago, a parade was held in Illinois, celebrating Independence Day. A week ago, a psychotic jerkbag opened fire on said parade, killing six people and injuring dozens more.

I'm not surprised by this. Honestly, I expected something like it to happen. There have been so many mass-shootings that the shock factor is gone, at least for me. It has become background noise, just another tragic event that fills out the evening news.

A group of schoolchildren are brutally gunned down. How does the local government react? They pass laws making it EASIER to acquire guns. There is no outrage left; only the dull resignation that such senseless, pointless acts of violence and killing will continue, likely becoming more frequent.

Some people just want to watch the world burn. I'm going to start the fire, but I won't rush to extinguish it either. Humanity had a good run, but now we are so intent on bringing about our own extinction. May as well let it happen. Maybe the next dominant species will do better.
