Uncertainty

I did it. I actually did it. I completed the Community Center in "Stardew Valley" in Year 1. Earlier this week, I had written that I would have to chance of doing so, due to my lack of a truffle. The day after I wrote that post, I purchased a truffle from the Traveling Merchant. It's like the Universe wants me to succeed, just so it can laugh at me.

This past real-life week has been a nerve-wracking experience. I was never quite sure what to think; "I can definitely do this!" became "There's no way I can do this!" became "I might be able to do this if I get really lucky?" Without a doubt, I would not have been able to accomplish this feat without the Traveling Merchant. I bought several items from her that I would not have been able to acquire otherwise: truffle, rabbit's foot, walleye.

It was the walleye that has been giving me problems. You can catch them in the Fall or Winter, but only when it is raining. It did not rain in the Fall, that I remember. Maybe it rained once or twice at the start, and I simply wasn't paying attention, but for the second half of the season, it did not rain once. And without any truffle oil, I could not craft a rain totem and summon rain. All I could do was wait, and hope I got lucky, and I did.

In the words of Pliny the Elder, 'The only certainty is that nothing is certain.'
