Lights in the Darkness

I stepped outside earlier, and walked around briefly, taking in the show around me. The fireflies are out and especially active. In past years, they would light up and stay lit for a second or two before darkening once more. Now, they flicker on and off like a light bulb in horror movie, right before something bad happens.

That is a rather unflattering comparison.

They flicker in the yard, like the stars themselves have descended to grace us with their presence, illuminating the night, only to darken so that others may shine. They sparkle, like a fireworks display in miniature, and yet much grander in scale. Dozens of lights going on and off each second, silently twinkling within the garden, around the trees.

It was dazzling, it was peaceful.
