Pricing a Smile

Earlier at work, a coworker of mine told me that smiles are free. One would probably take this to mean that I do not have to pay anything to smile, and that therefore I should smile (and have a postive attitude, and all that wholesome garbage). It occured to me that there was another way I could interpret that, though.

The cost of a thing and the value of that same thing are often comparable; if something is valuable, it has a high cost, and if the value is low, then it doesn't. To say that something is free could mean that it has a value so low that it is not worth anything.

So, by that reasoning, saying that smiles are free means that smiles are worthless.
